What is the AAA Greenlight Initiative?
Greenlight is AAA's multi-phased approach to educating members and the public about alternative fuels and automotive technologies. As a long-time leader on issues related to transportation and the environment, AAA is aligning many of our partnerships and community programs under the common goal of decreasing our fuel consumption and automobiles' impact on the environment.

What is "alternative fuel"?
Researchers are constantly developing new ways to fuel cars. An alternative fuel is any "non-traditional" fuel that can be used to power an automobile. Examples may include hydrogen gas, solar, electricity, natural gas, bio-diesel, ethanol, even french fry oil.

Where can I find more information on the different kinds of alternative fuels?
The website for the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center features information on a variety of alternative fuels.

What is an 'alternative vehicle'?
Any vehicle that utilizes an alternative fuel to power its engine is considered an alternative vehicle.

What do all those EV, LEV, abbreviations stand for?
Those abbreviations indicate car emission levels. Some vehicles are rated low-emissions vehicles (LEV), ultra-low emissions (ULEV), and super-ultra-low emissions (SULEV). An "EV" is an electric vehicle. An "HEV" stands for hybrid electric vehicle.
